The only exceptions that I can think of are video processing and AI, for both you can use a GPU upgrade at a certain date. So I agree with Apple's strategy in general. I now have a 14”, well spec’d, and I expect it will last longer than the 6 years of my first Mac. My second lasted a year, but that was a heat blaster 16” that turned its fans on when driving an external screen. My first Mac lasted 6 years and it was a base spec 14” MBP. And generally, macs fare better than Windows machines. I have a Windows machine from 2012 that runs everything just fine, and back then it wasn't particularly overspec'd (low power CPU because of passive cooling, but a decent SSD and 16GB of RAM). Because Apple puts high-end SSDs in them, it's perfectly possible to use them for 7 years for not too demanding applications. I spec them right and don't touch them afterwards. But then I haven't upgraded any machine I bought since 2012. Second, about the non-upgradability of the M1 machines. So possibly Apple knows this through market research and they consider it easy money. Most of them have the money to buy the pro, though. Thankfully, Apple has released a few Mx models since 2019 that while not "perfect", are well-suited for what I consider professional-level music production.įirst, I know several people who want a 15” machine but don't need a pro. Part of the new AS paradigm to date is poor upgradeability. I bought what I needed and have upgraded as needed since then. My 2010 cMP in some ways is my last "perfect" computer. It will be interesting to watch how Apple integrates Apple Silicon into its upcoming Mac Pro. This is good for Apple, Intel and professional users in general. After a brief panic, intel is now wide awake. While M1 fully disrupted mobile computing, it has simply stirred up the high-performance market. Apple did this knowing what was in the product pipeline. I think Apple released its brute-force Intel Mac Pro to serve professional users (like Roxy?) who would otherwise build a Windows box but prefer Mac OS. Beyond paying a bitcoin-scale electric bill, I can build a DAW that's handily best for all these applications. I can install multiple Windows PCs and multi-drive raid chassis in a machine closet with good ventilation and close the door. In a fixed studio environment, I'll say that most professionals will find a Mac configuration that works for them, including the Intel Mac Pro for some.įor large-scale commercial applications like film scoring, brute force computers may be desirable. With M1, Apple got way out in front of Intel I haven't studied the newest Intel CPUs but assume they are working to lower wattage as well?įor professional mobile audio applications, Apple Silicon seems a no brainer - light, cool, quiet, and insane battery life. Barely mentioned in this recent back and forth is power efficiency.
